Recreational Disputes That Could Have Been Resolved Hours Ago
About the Department
The Department of Unnecessary and Pointless Debate serves as the Federation's primary authority for recreational disagreements that have continued well beyond any reasonable expectation of resolution.
While many disputes begin with genuine uncertainty, this Department specializes in those that evolve into matters of pride, selective memory, personal philosophy, unsupported confidence, and the increasingly desperate refusal to admit being wrong.
The Department does not exist to eliminate debate.
It exists to ensure every unnecessary debate is conducted according to proper Federation procedure.
Whether the disagreement concerns a putt that "definitely would have dropped," a ball that "never crossed the hazard line," whose turn it actually was, or whether someone received an unfair bounce, the Department ensures every participant has an equal opportunity to passionately overstate their position.
Core Responsibilities
- Register prolonged recreational debates
- Moderate arguments that have exceeded acceptable duration
- Review conflicting eyewitness testimony
- Preserve historically significant disagreements
- Evaluate speculative "what would have happened" scenarios
- Certify officially unresolved arguments
- Issue procedural guidance for future debates
Commonly Reviewed Cases
Case 01
The Infinite Gimme
A conceded putt becomes the subject of discussion long after the scorecard has been signed.
Case 02
The Wind Changed
A player attributes an unsuccessful shot to environmental conditions that nobody else observed.
Case 03
The Cart Path Philosophy
Participants debate whether an unusual bounce represents extraordinary luck or inevitable destiny.
Case 04
The "I Was Ready" Incident
An argument over whose turn it actually was continues despite overwhelming evidence that nobody remembers.
Case 05
The Breakfast Excuse
A poor performance is attributed entirely to an insufficient breakfast, excessive breakfast, or poorly timed breakfast.
Case 06
The Counterfactual Championship
One participant insists they "would have won" if an entirely different sequence of events had occurred.
Debate Review Process
Step 1
Submit the Argument Registration Form
Applicants must summarize the disagreement without exaggeration, although the Department recognizes this requirement is rarely satisfied.
Step 2
Collect Statements
Participants may submit testimony, scorecards, photographs, GPS data, diagrams, and passionately worded recollections.
Step 3
Assess Debate Severity
The reviewing officer determines whether the discussion is:
- Mildly Unnecessary
- Entirely Avoidable
- Spectacularly Pointless
- Historically Entertaining
Step 4
Review Supporting Evidence
Evidence is evaluated for credibility, completeness, and obvious bias.
Statements beginning with "Everybody knows..." receive heightened scrutiny.
Step 5
Issue Findings
Possible outcomes include:
- Debate Resolved
- Debate Deferred
- Debate Archived
- Debate Officially Unresolvable
- Continue Arguing at Your Own Risk
- Commissioner Review
Official Classifications
Minor Discussion
Reasonable people briefly disagreed.
Recreational Debate
The disagreement exceeded normal competitive conversation.
Extended Argument
Multiple witnesses became unintentionally involved.
Legendary Debate
The argument has become part of local recreational history.
Perpetual Federation Matter
The disagreement shall remain unresolved indefinitely for the benefit of future generations.
Official Notices
Repeating the same argument louder does not strengthen the evidence.
The phrase "Everybody knows..." does not identify an actual witness.
Hypothetical victories are not entered into official standings.
Any debate that survives lunch is automatically classified as an Extended Argument.
Any disagreement still active after the following weekend becomes a permanent Federation record.
Commissioner's Guidance
The Commissioner recognizes that certain recreational arguments are simply too enjoyable to resolve.
These debates become part of the shared history of every group, growing slightly more dramatic with each retelling until the original facts become almost entirely ceremonial.
Accordingly, the Department encourages spirited discussion, respectful disagreement, and the occasional acceptance that nobody will ever convince anyone else.
Related Federation Departments
The Department of Unnecessary and Pointless Debate cannot restore lost afternoons, shorten group text chains, convince stubborn participants, or prevent someone from saying, "That's not how I remember it."
All findings are official, unofficial, endlessly debatable, and subject to future reinterpretation under the Quantum Mulligan Doctrine.
